Laura and baby Gabriella…
Laura had known only one way of life…the one she grew up in. Where moms and dads don’t get married, where siblings have different fathers, where home is defined by the address of the day.
For her, stability was a foreign concept. Hope was only a pipe dream. Poverty was not just a current reality – it was a generational legacy.
Getting pregnant seemed the norm in Laura’s family…but not a welcomed one. Her mother had no way of helping her. She had her own children to care for. In fact, she was also pregnant, this time with her seventh child.
Laura came to Tapestry because she could get a free pregnancy test. She’d heard about us through friends. “They are good people. They will help you.” – she was told.
So she came…and we helped. More then that….we loved. Laura stole our hearts from her first visit. It was so easy to see her potential. The bigger hurdle was getting HER to see it and believe it.
As Laura worked through our programs, attending her prenatal appointments, working with her mentor, she was able to equip herself with parenting skills, finish her GED and found a new job. Not long after Gabriella was born, she was able to move into her first place on her own.
Her visits are often, still needing to feel connected to us for added support when the days feel long and daunting. Which is fine with us! After all, isn’t that what family is for?
